Chef-led Tour of Sacramento’s Sunday Farmers’ Market

Slow Food Sacramento’s Chef-led Tour of Sacramento’s Sunday Farmers’ Market  underscored the connections between farm and table. The tour began the morning by meeting Renae Best, Roxanne O’Brien, and Simone McKinley at 8th & W. Renae, co-manager of the Market, explained the market’s organization and goals. Roxanne, experienced local chef and Slow Food member, discussed what she looks for, emphasizing early June produce of particular interest.

We then broke into three groups of eight and each group visited a few farmers to learn about what’s in season, what looks good, and why. Wel made new connections, learned about choosing fresh seasonal food, and did it all from a chef’s perspective.

After the tour, guests regrouped at the Avid Reader (the Tower on Broadway at Land Park Drive) for a book signing with local cookbook author Ann Rolke. Ann discuseed “Hands-Off Cooking: Low-Supervision, High-Flavor Meals for Busy People.”  Her quick-and-easy recipes emphasize freshness and flavor and avoid processed foods. She was available to answer questions and sign books.
