The Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op sells only organic produce – most of it from local farms. This commitment contributes to cleaner air and water and healthier farmworkers. Signage on each item indicates where it was grown. Demos in the store promote seasonal items from local farms, and flyers are always available to educate customers on what is in season. They follow the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program guidelines and sell only seafood rated as “Best Choices” or “Good Alternatives.” Greenpeace has recognized the Meat Department for its commitment to sustainable seafood. The meat and poultry sold is humanely raised with no antibiotics or growth hormones, and most of it is organic and/or Non-GMO Verified. The Co-op encouraged reusable bags and eliminated the use of plastic bags at the checkout more than a decade before a statewide ban on them became a possibility.
