Terra Madre means “Mother Earth” in Italian. And for those who see good, clean, and fair principles as part of the recipe for a better world, it is about practicing Slow Food values with a global consciousness and citizenship. It is an opportunity to realize and connect to the diverse food and farming communities, histories, cultures, struggles and solutions here in the U.S. and worldwide.

Slow Food Sacramento invites its members to celebrate Terra Madre Day by participating in our Annual Slow Food Sacramento Membership Meeting and Potluck
For Slow Food’s 26th Anniversary, Terra Madre Day 2015 will be celebrated simultaneously throughout Slow Food California and the Pacific Region (Hawai`i, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, and California). Again this year, we are celebrating Ark of Taste foods, an important opportunity to protect local foods and food traditions.
Meet Chanowk Yisrael, Slow Food Sacramento delegate to the international We Feed the Planet held in Milan, Italy Oct. 3-6, 2015. Chanowk is a local urban farmer who will share his experiences from his visit to Italy for We Feed the Planet, an international gathering of farmers, fishers and food producers worldwide under age 40 who met to share their best ideas for how to feed the planet in the decades ahead.
We will also hear from board member Lisa Frank about the first Slow Food California Slow Food Mexico tour in November. And we’ll review our meetings with Edie Mukiibi, recently in Sacramento for the conclusion of his Good News from Africa Food Sovereignty tour.
We encourage everyone to bring a GMO-free dish to share that includes one or more Slow Food Ark of Taste ingredients. Last year our various dishes included over a dozen Ark of Taste foods. Let’s discover even more this year.
Please bring a label for your dish and be prepared to share the story of your dish and where you found your Ark of Taste ingredient- if you succeeded!
For our zero waste event, please bring your own flatware, plates, napkins and a glass. Don’t forget to include your curiosity and enthusiasm for good clean and fair food for all!
Our brief business meeting will feature election of 2016 Board members and a quick review of 2015 and look forward to 2016.
Board nominees for 2016: Kathy Les (President), Mary Rousseve (Vice-President), Coral Henning (Immediate Past President), Janice Daniels (Secretary), Karen Auwaerter (Treasurer)), Brenda Ruiz (School Garden Coalition and Youth Projects Director), Cinamon Vann (ex officio as Snail of Approval Chair), Charity Kenyon (ex officio as Membership Director), Shelley Blanton Stroud (ex officio), Lisa Frank (ex officio), Scott Singer (ex officio), Kathleen Albiani (ex officio as Book Club chair), Michael Tuohy (ex officio).
