The Fair Oaks Horticulture Center Vegetable Demonstration project is a living classroom where Master Gardeners conduct trials to determine which vegetable varieties grow most successfully in the Sacramento area. The trial results are communicated to the public through workshops and open gardens, print and online publications, and on the Sacramento County Master Gardener website. This year the garden featured an entire bed of Slow Food USA-recognized Ark of Taste vegetables. Because seeds of the Ark of Taste vegetables are often difficult for home gardeners to find, they provide information about companies that sell Ark of Taste vegetable seeds. Throughout the harvest season, part of the produce grown at the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center vegetable garden is donated to area food banks.
